San Mateo, CA — Council Member Rob Newsom Jr., a lifelong San Mateo resident, Former Mayor of San Mateo, and current representative for City Council District 3, announced today that he is running for re-election in November 2026, reaffirming his commitment to practical, community-focused leadership and responsive local government.
“I’m running for re-election because I love this city and believe deeply in its future,” said Newsom. “San Mateo is at a pivotal moment. Decisions we make now about housing, infrastructure, public safety, and neighborhood quality of life will shape our community for decades. I want to continue being a steady, thoughtful voice for residents as we move forward together.”
Raised in San Mateo, Newsom attended local schools including St. Matthew’s Catholic School, Borel Middle School, and St. Ignatius College Preparatory. An Eagle Scout with San Mateo’s Troop 42, he has lived in the Sunnybrae neighborhood for nearly 25 years and has long been active in civic life.
Newsom was elected to the City Council in November 2022. Prior to his election, he served on San Mateo’s Personnel Board and as Vice President of the Sunnybrae Neighborhood Association, where he worked closely with residents on local concerns and neighborhood improvements. Professionally, Newsom studied Graphic Communications and Printing Management at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and has spent most of his career working in operations within the printing and transportation industries.
During his time on the City Council, Newsom has focused on transparent decision-making, fiscal responsibility, and ensuring that growth and change respect the character of San Mateo’s neighborhoods while preparing the city for the future.
“Good local government starts with listening,” Newsom said. “Whether it’s addressing everyday quality-of-life issues or planning for long-term challenges, I believe residents deserve leadership that is accessible, honest, and grounded in common sense.”
Newsom emphasized that his 2026 campaign will be a grassroots effort powered by community involvement. Early support, he noted, is critical to building a strong and competitive campaign as the city approaches important policy decisions.
Outside of public service, Newsom enjoys hiking, biking, camping, and barbecuing, and spending time outdoors with his wife, Jen, and their daughters, Maeve and Mara.
