Rob has accomplished a great deal for San Mateo in his tenure as mayor and on city council. He has established himself as a thoughtful, reasonable leader who seeks compromise on often nuanced and complex issues.

Making San Mateo a better place to live, work, and play...

Public Safety

​

  • Launched San Mateo Police Dept (SMPD)'s RTIC (Real-Time Information Center) which is making huge impacts on both public safety & crime reduction

  • Created RV Homeless Outreach to get people into shelters. Reduced RV's from (updated) 82 to 15

  • Served on SM Consolidated Fire Department (JPA) at Fire Board Chair

  • Helped City plan for replacement of SM's oldest fire station #27

  • Worked on County Office of Emergency Services as representative for City of San Mateo & advocated for funding for new HazMat truck

  • Implemented City Staff Emergency Preparedness training to improve our city-readiness for an emergency or natural disaster

Housing

​

  • Created a task force to ensure that new housing projects are reviewed for their impacts and demands on infrastructure and traffic

  • Funded Bridge-Funding for Tenants with hardships, to prevent housing loss during layoff or financial challenges. 54+ families were kept from losing their homes

Cost-cutting / Fiscal Responsibility

​

  • Successfully settled the $80m Housing Action Coalition Lawsuit that had the potential to bankrupt the city

  • Changed Reserve Policy to free up $25M for capital improvement projects

  • Public Works consolidated into a City building to save $1M per year

  • Implemented an Economic Development Workplace Study

  • Generated $110,000 per year in leasing unused parking garage space

  • Implemented a survey of all physical properties / assets to better plan for aging infrastructure

Infrastructure

​

  • Funded emergency repairs to keep MLK & Joinville pools from closing

  • Prioritize major MLK Center renovations

  • Broke ground on new Central Park Playground

  • Started renovation of Marina Library

  • Completed $1Billion new Waste Water Treatment Plant

Public Works

​

  • Implemented a City-wide Transportation Study

  • Got community engagement and buy-in for the S. Delaware St. Bike lanes

  • Adopted Small Cell Design ordinance

​

Downtown Preservation/Improvement

​

  • Worked with Downtown San Mateo Merchants Association (DSMA) to reinvigorate downtown with more events

  • made 2 block pedestrian mall closure permanent

​

Ethics/Integrity

​

  • Supported creation of Council & Board/Commissioner's Code of Conduct

​

Improved Communications

​

  • City Manager now sends a weekly e-newsletter and 2x yearly mailer
